the Handmade House at the Ramble in Asheville, NC just closed, and I was thrilled to be a part of this project.   A beautiful new home built to Green Building standards and the Healthy Built home standard and filled with the work of over 100 western NC artists and craftsman.  It sits on land formerly part of the Biltmore Estate and is just a spectacular place.  I knew going into this project that it would be special, but the degree and volume of talent and skill that was put into the house, grounds and all the furnishings and artwork inside and around the house is amazing.  It was quite a wonderful experience to be a part of such a wonderful undertaking.  This was a collaborative effort between Handmade in America, Biltmore Forest Developers, Jim Samsel Architects, Susan Nilson ASID, and La Quatra Bonci Associates, and as an artist/craftsman I would like to thank all of their efforts to showcase this work and to educate on many levels: environmental, local economy, and the possibilities of what can happen when developers, designers and artists work together on a project, coordinating and communicating from the design stages.  I would like to say a word of thanks also to Drew Crawford and Woodenstone Gallery in Davidson, NC for support in my preperation for this project. A forthcoming guidebook will be developed to assist other areas around the country in undertaking similar projects.

The June issue of American Style Magazine has a couple of articles on Asheville, NC.  Asheville was named the #2 Top Art Destination in America, and in that article talks about the Handmade House at the Ramble, a project which I am very proud and excited to have worked on.  Also the April Issue has a full page of the coffee table "Mountain Peace" which I made for the HMH and a picture of the dining table from the same project.

WPCC CLASS PICTURES   One of the most rewarding things I have the opportunity to do in my life at present is to teach in a retraining program for displaced furniture  workers at Western Piedmont Community College.  This program adresses the very serious problem of the virtual collapse of the once thriving furniture and textile industry in our area, as unemployment nears 16% in my home county.  I am inspired daily by the attitude and drive to improve their skills and employment opportunities by the students in my class.  We made a side table for the United Way campaign at the school and I think it turned out pretty nice.  Click on the link below to see the pictures
